Seattle Shakeup: How Sub Pop Changed Again in 2011 →
nprmusic: Here’s a scenario: You come home for Christmas, call up your old punk rock buddies, and find out they’re really into hip-hop and dance music now. Catching up, you pretend to understand words like “chillwave” and “dubstep,” taking their word for it that those are, in fact, real things. That’s what’s going on right now with Seattle’s Sub Pop Records, known for bringing fringe...

Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of...
NPR’s music critic and correspondent Ann Powers writes: “…I know the Pacific Northwest well enough to be mightily impressed with the truth Yarm uncovered. This exhaustive oral history features unknowns, cult figures, supporting players and stars; each gets the time he or she deserves as Yarm pieces together the arc of a scene that built itself from scratch, blossomed beyond most...

A very Thrown Ups Christmas...
In this very special holiday outtake from Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge, Thrown Ups bassist Leighton Beezer tells the story of the grunge improvisers’ last show before their 1991 breakup: “The Thrown Ups’ last show was my favorite one, because it was so horribly misunderstood. This was ‘90, it was definitely Christmas. It was at the Off Ramp, and Ed...

room1000yearswide: I’m finished reading Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge. The last part about Layne had me crying like a little bitch. I really suggest this book to everybody who enjoys grunge music. It was really fantastic in giving the history of the music scene in Seattle through the 80’s and 90’s. I can’t stress enough how informative and wonderful this book is.

Everybody Loves Our Town makes Spin's Top 10 music...
There’s certainly no shortage of entertainingly thorough books documenting the early ’90s alt-rock boom and What Kurt Hath Wrought. But for exhaustive detail about Seattle’s unlikely, meteoric stint as the center of the universe — from Cat Butt to Candlebox and all points in between — this is hard to beat. As Yarm himself testifies, “It’s got it all: tragedy,...

geargiveaway365: I must admit that I love me some Soundgarden. I can remember mowing my parents’ lawn and delivering newspapers while listening to Badmoterfinger.
