So the TAD reunion is just a sorta reunion: To clarify; Tad Doyle and Gary Thorstensen (two original members of TAD) will be joining Brothers of the Sonic Cloth to play a set of songs from the band TAD’s God’s Balls, Salt Lick and 8-Way Santarecord at the Sub Pop Records 25th Jubilee in Seattle’s Georgetown in July 2013. Details to follow. #SP25

Interesting that Thorstensen is participating, as he declined to be interviewed for the TAD documentary. Also: Love Pavitt’s Facebook comment!

Happy 25th birthday, Sub Pop!

“April 1, 1988, is when we quit our day jobs and moved into our tiny, original office, in the Terminal Sales Building downtown. It’s the first day of Sub Pop, with a big asterisk next to it: Except for the previous eight years.”

Sub Pop cofounder Bruce Pavitt, from Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge

Kerrang! spread on Sub Pop cofounder Bruce Pavitt’s new ebook, Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989 (reportedly due out as a physical book in a few months).

Two related (and free) events in New York tonight: Pavitt will read from the book and be interviewed by Michael Azerrad at the Apple Store in Soho at 7. At midnight, Pavitt will DJ in the lobby of the Ace Hotel.

EW.com has posted an interview with Sub Pop cofounder Bruce Pavitt and some exclusive images from his new ebook Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989. Here’s what Pavitt has to say about the above photo, which he took at Rough Trade Records in London:

“You’ve got one of the world’s most famous rock stars ever, and here is this innocent period where he’s just talking about music. It’s a very sweet image, and to go back in time to see people just relating to each other as bands, as friends, as community, it’s really powerful. This is the big rock-star moment of the whole book, and it’s him signing an autograph in a tiny story to a handful of customers. He wasn’t cleaning toilets in Aberdeen, he was signing his record. That’s a big lifestyle shift in six months.”

The $9.99 ebook, sales of which benefit Seattle’s Vera Project, features rare and never-before-seen photos of all three bands. Order it here.

JACK ENDINO (Skin Yard guitarist) There was a little bit of weirdness with Sub Pop, because Skin Yard was not a band that they felt was appropriate for the label, and it wasn’t hard to see why—we were a little too metal. But strangely enough, our bass player, Daniel, wound up working for them for a couple years. It used to drive Daniel nuts that he couldn’t get his own band onto the label, but I stayed the hell out of this because I was still recording all the records for Sub Pop.

DANIEL HOUSE (Skin Yard bassist) When I first started working there, it was Bruce [Pavitt], Jon [Poneman], and me. Charles Peterson had been there earlier and a couple people would come and go. Bruce seemed to have almost contempt for Skin Yard. He hated Ben’s singing. Too melodramatic. He felt like there were elements of our music, the prog- rock elements, that were anti-everything that his label was trying to establish. Jon liked our band. And he actually tried to push Bruce to put us out, but Bruce wouldn’t budge. They eventually put out a Skin Yard seven-inch to just shut everybody up, or at least that’s how I saw it.
